The author of Jane Jacobs and the Death of American Planning, being a professor and an associate of the finest planning American planners, gives an insight into urban planning. Through his article we learn about how city planning evolved in the United States, as well as the shifts that came along with it. City planning involved several aspects, for instance, land use control and environment design. Designing transportation networks beforehand would act as a guideline and ensure that settlements and future developments appear in order. This was a general layout for most states in America at that time. The article’s importance comes handy in understanding Transportation of Atlanta due to its focus on the urban planning, evolution and impacts of Jane Jacob’s theory.

Good transport networks ensure smooth movement from one point to another and thus save on valuable time. However, transport becomes a critical issue when the environment surrounding it is unsafe and hazardous, due to lack of proper environmental policies. To ensure consideration of certain factors during an activity, and that there is proper implementation of every plan put in place we require policies. We refer to these policies as urban policies. In her talk McArthur is winning the activist Majora Carter details of her fight for environmental justice in the neighborhood of South Bronx. There she blames on the flawed urban policies and inability to implement them. While studying transportation in Atlanta, one important factor to put emphasis on is the effects of transportation networks to the current environment and settlements. These impacts could lead us into drawing conclusions on whether transportation department of Atlanta has adhered to the policies and if not, realize the associated consequences.

The case studies introduce an important aspect in transportation of Atlanta. Comparison of case studies gives clear picture of the changes needed to make transport in Atlanta the best. It provides some ideas that have worked for Atlanta and other cities during redesigning and redeveloping.

Atlanta could borrow a leaf from the words of Gorton, the entrepreneur and livable streets advocate. Gorton has spent time and efforts trying to understand the ways to improve the streets of New York. He did this by gathering examples of how transportation networks could influence the daily lives of people living in a particular area. Mark’s intentions are far wider than he has revealed and he claims that New York still needs a set of changes. Through his talks we get an insight into some ideas brought forth by Gorton and make comparisons between the city of New York and Atlanta. Despite massive physical differences between the two cities, some of Gorton’s ideas for New York could still influence Atlanta’s transportation system.

The brainchild behind the Atlanta BeltLine, Ryan in his talk speaks about his motivation towards the BeltLine movement and his efforts to see Atlanta in a better light. Having presented it as his master’s thesis and later to the most influential personalities in Atlanta, his work seems to have borne some wonderful fruits to Atlanta city. It resulted in affordable housing, created jobs for the locals, and brought about a livable environment for residents among other benefits. The Beltline has become one of the most successful projects in history providing new life to transport system in the city. One of the reasons for success was his careful design and plan which he made while putting into consideration critical issues like environment, for instance.

To James Kunstler, public spaces inspire, provide a sense peace and a breath of life. They manifest life and space for the common good of all. However, he claims that America has many places not cared for to standard. Incompetence of urban designers and poor design structures have led to the wreckage of cities. One bad design leads to other mishaps. As the city continues to grow, it becomes harder and uneconomical to reverse any negative impacts, as it requires a lot more resources, supposedly very expensive. Any effort to do so may have horrific impacts on the residents leading to such instances as displacement and loss of infrastructure. By studying transportation of Atlanta we are able to gauge the impacts of its architecture and determine its impacts. We are also able to analyze it and compare with those of other cities as from the knowledge gained from Kunstler’s talks among others.
