Of great significance to be noted here is the instance in which Zeus pity is not only sought by Orestes, but Orestes also asserts that Zeus will benefit to a great extent if he assists their quest since by doing so, he will enable them to present bigger and better sacrifices to him in future. This instance of a penitent telling bringing into account past sacrifices and future ones when asking for favors is interesting given that the modern man may find this to be distasteful since it seems like buying favors. For the ancient Greeks and indeed all the people of the time, while gods were deemed to be higher than human beings they had many aspects common to human beings such as requiring sacrifices both future and past in order to grant favors (Lattimore, 1953). As such while the gods were deemed omnipotent, they were also deemed to be as fickle if not mote fickle than humans and hence their favor had to be bought through massaging of their ego to prevent unleashing of their malevolent nature. What is weird though is the reasoning behind the instance of the favor granted by the gods. The gods are the sources of all things and by their benevolence or malevolence determine fortunes and riches. It is a question that is of great significance not only in modern times but also in ancient times. This is because what is given to the gods in terms of sacrifices or offerings in terms of tithes in modern times is given back to the gods thereby making the whole exercise seem beyond logic. Another thing of note is the question of what would happen to persons who had nothing to offer the gods given that the society has poor and the wealthy. It would seem as if this society and their conception of god would more likely favor the wealthy who are able to afford expensive sacrifices and get richer while the poor will not receive favor due to poor or no sacrifices and the lack of capacity to promise future sacrifice.
